The Wanganui War Memorial Centre is gearing up for a concert and associated events to raise funds for Vanuatu and Nepal.
The concert was born from a discussion centre manager Ken Carrick and venue attendant Christina Emery had with Elise Goodge from Mainstreet.
“We were talking with Elise about how we could use the War Memorial Centre in bringing the public together for a concert; at the same time Elise had been thinking about a fundraising initiative for Vanuatu. Since the idea came to fruition there has unfortunately been the devastating earthquake in Nepal, so we’d like to be able to split the funds raised to help both areas,” says Christina.
“Even though the Relief Concert will not happen until June and New Zealanders will have ‘moved on with their lives’, the lives of the people in Vanuatu and Nepal will forever be marred by these natural disasters and rebuilding will not be a quick process by any stretch of the imagination,” says Christina. The Relief Concert is on Saturday, June 6, from 3-7pm. The lineup will include the Clazzmatic Boogie Orchestra and a new band formed by Quin McGregor from Black Trio, plus more bands to be confirmed.
The bands will be broken up by a Lip Synching Competition organised by More FM and an auction to add to the total funds. Entry cost will be $5 per person or $20 for a family pass – two adults and three children.
“As part of the fundraiser, local aid agencies have been invited to put up stalls on the top foyer and local street vendors are welcome to set-up on the forecourt if they agree to donate 20 per cent of their profits to the relief fund as well,” says Christina.
